Steven's 1960s ranch home in Lemon Heights, North Tustin, had carpet pulled off a slab poured without a vapor barrier, and he wanted the concrete itself as the finished floor. We ran a calcium chloride moisture test first, then laid a moisture-mitigating epoxy primer, warm gray solid color, satin clear across the family room and hall, about 820 sq ft. The floor was an estimated $5,200 to $7,600 and took an estimated 2 to 3 days, with the bedrooms untouched until the last day. The result is a seamless living-room floor that will not blister when the ground stays damp in winter.

Why Owners Go Back to the Slab

Owners go back to the slab because a coated concrete floor has no seams, no grout and no carpet pad to hold dust, pet hair or spills. In older ranch homes across North Tustin and Diamond Bar, the slab under worn carpet is often sound, and coating it costs less than tearing it out for tile. Casitas, ADUs and garage conversions in Claremont and Riverside are the other big group, since they often start as bare concrete.

Removing Carpet, Tile and Adhesive: Mistakes to Avoid

Old adhesive must come off completely, or the new coating fails over it. Carpet glue, vinyl mastic and black cutback all soften under a fresh coat, and the floor peels in exactly the shape of the old room.

  • Carpet tack strip and pad: pulled, nail holes filled, staple marks ground flush.
  • Ceramic tile: broken out, then thinset ground off down to bare concrete, the usual job in older kitchens and halls across Woodcrest and Norco.
  • Glued vinyl and black mastic: ground off with dust-shrouded diamond tooling, never stripped with solvent in a lived-in house.
  • Older black mastic: we treat pre-1980s cutback as suspect until it is tested, and the grind waits until it is.

Grinding off old flooring typically runs 4 to 8 hours per room set and is priced inside the floor job, not sold on its own.

Choosing a System for Living Space

A solid color epoxy under a satin polyaspartic clear is the system most interior floors get, because it reads calm under furniture and lamps. Flake looks too much like a garage indoors for most owners, and metallic suits one showpiece room, like a game room in Villa Park or San Antonio Heights, rather than a whole house.

What Every Interior Floor Includes

Surface prep
Mechanical diamond grinding to a CSP 2 to CSP 3 profile on every floor, never acid etching
Dry film thickness
15 to 35 mils on a multi-coat flake system, 40 to 120 mils on high-build and self-leveling floors
Basecoat solids
80% to 100% solids by volume, so the coat does not shrink thin as it cures
Topcoat
UV-stable aliphatic polyaspartic clear coat that will not amber in the sun through an open garage door
Moisture testing
Every slab tested; above 3 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours it gets a moisture-mitigating epoxy primer
Hot-tire resistance
Rated for tire contact heat from 140°F to 180°F
Slip resistance
0.60 to 0.85 DCOF with aluminum oxide or polymer grit in the clear coat
Hardness
75 to 85 Shore D, so a dropped wrench or a jack stand does not gouge it
Compressive strength
8,000 to 12,000 PSI, well above the 3,000 to 4,000 PSI of the slab underneath
VOC content
0 to 50 g/L, inside South Coast AQMD limits
Walk-on time
4 to 8 hours on polyaspartic, 18 to 24 hours on 100% solids epoxy
Park-on time
24 to 36 hours on polyaspartic, 72 to 96 hours on 100% solids epoxy

Living Around the Work

Interior jobs are phased room by room, so a family stays in the house while we coat it. We seal each work zone with plastic, run dust-shrouded grinders and keep one path to the kitchen and bathroom open.

On a typical two-zone home in Eastvale or El Sobrante, day one is grinding and priming the first zone, day two is color and clear on that zone while the second is ground, and the last day finishes the second zone. Sofas, beds and dining tables go back after roughly 24 to 36 hours on polyaspartic, and we help move the heavy pieces back into each finished room. Pets and small children stay out of the work zone until the clear has cured, typically 18 to 24 hours on the epoxy coats.

Interior Concrete Floor Cost in Riverside County

An interior concrete floor coating is estimated at $3,800 to $8,000 for 600 to 1,000 sq ft, and adhesive removal, moisture mitigation and the number of rooms move the price most. Steven's family room and hall in North Tustin, an estimated $5,200 to $7,600, sat in the middle because the slab needed a moisture primer but had no tile to break out.

Stubborn glue or old paint typically adds an estimated $800 to $3,000 inside the floor job, depending on how many rooms carry it.

These figures are estimates for interior slabs, and they are subject to change. The written quote we give after testing and measuring sets the final price and the install schedule, and it depends on the old flooring, the moisture reading and the number of rooms.

Why Families Choose Our Interior Crew

Our owner reads every moisture test himself, which matters most on the older slabs of North Tustin and Claremont, where many were poured without a vapor retarder. After 1,187 projects in 12 years, our crews know how to grind inside a furnished house and leave it clean every evening. Each floor is covered by our 2-year workmanship warranty against peeling, delamination and hot-tire pickup, and by Coating makers' product warranties, typically 5 to 10 years on professionally installed systems, passed through to you in writing.

Coating Materials for Inside the House

If you want the slab with no coating at all, ask about polished concrete floors, and for one showpiece room, a metallic epoxy floor in the game room or office.

Interior Floor Service Areas

We coat interior slabs across our 45-mile radius, with ranch homes in North Tustin, Craftsman bungalows and ADUs in Claremont and hillside homes in Diamond Bar, plus Villa Park, Yorba Linda and Eastvale on our service area page.

Interior Concrete Floor Questions

How much does it cost to coat an interior slab?

An interior floor is estimated at $3,800 to $8,000 for 600 to 1,000 sq ft, and your written quote sets the final price after the moisture test.

Can I live in the house during the work?

Yes, we phase the work room by room and keep a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom open throughout.

How long does an interior floor take?

Most homes take an estimated 2 to 3 days, with furniture back typically 24 to 36 hours after the clear coat.

Will the coating smell?

Our systems run 0 to 50 g/L VOC, so the odor is light and clears quickly with the windows open.

Do you remove the carpet glue?

Yes, every trace of glue and mastic is ground off before the primer, because a coating over adhesive peels.

Is a coated slab cold underfoot?

Concrete feels cooler than carpet, which most owners in the Inland Empire like in summer, and rugs warm it up in winter.

Can a slab with no vapor barrier be coated?

Yes, after a moisture test, with a moisture-mitigating primer under the color coat, as in Steven's ranch home in Lemon Heights.

How big a deposit do you take?

Your deposit is capped by California at $1,000 or 10% of the contract, whichever comes in lower.
