Robert's four-car showcase garage on an estate lot off Santiago Boulevard in Villa Park is a charcoal and silver metallic floor under a scratch-resistant polyaspartic clear. He collects cars and wanted the 4-car showcase garage, about 760 sq ft, to read like a gallery, so we ground the slab flat, primed it and worked the metallic coat by hand, with anti-slip grit in the clear only at the door. Robert's project was an estimated $8,500 to $11,800 and took an estimated 3 to 4 days on site, including a full day for the clear to harden before the cars rolled back in.

Kevin's lower level in The Country Estates in Diamond Bar sat on an old slab with a long settlement crack. We stitched and filled the crack before grinding, then poured designer metallic epoxy in pearl and bronze, high-gloss clear, so the floor shows one continuous swirl with no line across it. The game room and wine room, about 640 sq ft, came in at an estimated $6,800 to $10,400, and the install typically ran a few days longer than a garage because furniture had to move room by room.

How a Metallic Floor Is Made, Step by Step

A metallic floor is built in four coats over roughly 3 to 4 days, and the look is made by hand in the third coat while the resin is still wet. That is why no two metallic floors match, even in the same color.

  1. Grind and repair: diamond grinding to a CSP 2 to CSP 3 profile, then cracks routed and filled flush, because a metallic coat shows every dip.
  2. Prime: a moisture-mitigating epoxy primer goes down wherever the slab tests above 3 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per day.
  3. Metallic coat: 100% solids epoxy tinted with metallic powder, poured and moved by roller, brush and trowel while our lead installer works the veins and a second installer keeps feeding resin, so the pour never skins over in Inland Empire heat.
  4. Clear coat: UV-stable aliphatic polyaspartic clear coat that will not amber in the sun through an open garage door, the coat that keeps a metallic floor's color true for years under shop lights.

Choosing Colors and Movement

Color choice decides whether a metallic floor looks like marble, lava, water or brushed metal, and the movement you pick matters as much as the pigment. Charcoal and silver reads as polished stone, like Robert's garage in Villa Park, while pearl and bronze reads warmer, like Kevin's lower level in Diamond Bar.

  • Tight movement: small cells and fine veins, calm under bright shop lights.
  • Wide movement: big sweeps and pools of color, the classic poured-stone look.
  • Two-tone: a dark base with a lighter metallic floated over it for depth.

Lighting changes how the floor reads. LED shop lights flatten the depth, while warm can lights and daylight from a side door make the swirls look a foot deep.

What Every Metallic Install Includes

Surface prep
Mechanical diamond grinding to a CSP 2 to CSP 3 profile on every floor, never acid etching
Dry film thickness
15 to 35 mils on a multi-coat flake system, 40 to 120 mils on high-build and self-leveling floors
Basecoat solids
80% to 100% solids by volume, so the coat does not shrink thin as it cures
Topcoat
UV-stable aliphatic polyaspartic clear coat that will not amber in the sun through an open garage door
Moisture testing
Every slab tested; above 3 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours it gets a moisture-mitigating epoxy primer
Hot-tire resistance
Rated for tire contact heat from 140°F to 180°F
Slip resistance
0.60 to 0.85 DCOF with aluminum oxide or polymer grit in the clear coat
Hardness
75 to 85 Shore D, so a dropped wrench or a jack stand does not gouge it
Compressive strength
8,000 to 12,000 PSI, well above the 3,000 to 4,000 PSI of the slab underneath
VOC content
0 to 50 g/L, inside South Coast AQMD limits
Walk-on time
4 to 8 hours on polyaspartic, 18 to 24 hours on 100% solids epoxy
Park-on time
24 to 36 hours on polyaspartic, 72 to 96 hours on 100% solids epoxy

Where Metallic Floors Work and Where They Fail

Metallic epoxy is an interior and covered-space floor, and it fails in direct sun and outdoors. Plain epoxy ambers under UV, and even under a UV-stable clear, a pour that sits in afternoon sun on a Riverside patio heats, moves and dulls.

It works in show garages, game rooms, home offices, studios and wine rooms, and it suits the older lower-level slabs of North Tustin and San Antonio Heights once they pass a moisture test. It is a poor choice for a pool deck, a patio or a garage floor that floods. For wet rooms we steer owners to a textured quartz floor, and for outdoor slabs to a patio, porch or pool deck coating in UV-stable polyaspartic with a grit texture.

The other common mistake is skipping the grind on an older slab. Metallic resin flows to the low spots, so a slab with a dip by the drain shows a dark pool there forever.

Metallic vs Flake vs Quartz Floors

Metallic is the showpiece finish, flake is the everyday garage finish and quartz is the hard-wearing wet-room finish. The table compares the three by estimated price, look and grip.

Metallic Epoxy Floor Cost in Riverside

A metallic epoxy floor in the Riverside area is estimated at $4,500 to $12,000 for 400 to 800 sq ft, and the slab repair, the room size and the number of colors move the price most. The two floors above, an estimated $8,500 to $11,800 in Villa Park and an estimated $6,800 to $10,400 in Diamond Bar, sit in the upper half because both started on slabs that needed work.

An old DIY coating has to come off first, which typically adds an estimated $800 to $3,000 inside the floor job. Walk-on time on the polyaspartic clear is typically 4 to 8 hours, and furniture or cars go back after roughly 24 to 36 hours.

Coating Materials We Pair With Metallic

Owners often compare metallic with a textured quartz broadcast floor for laundry and mud rooms, or a UV-stable polyaspartic garage system when the car parks in the sun.

Metallic Floor Service Areas

We pour metallic floors all around Riverside, with showcase garages in Villa Park estates, lower levels in Diamond Bar's Country Estates and game rooms in Yorba Linda, plus Eastvale, Norco and Claremont on our service area page.

Metallic Epoxy Questions From Riverside Homeowners

How much does a metallic epoxy floor cost in Riverside?

A metallic floor is estimated at $4,500 to $12,000 for 400 to 800 sq ft, and your written quote sets the final price after the slab test.

How long does a metallic floor take to install?

Most installs take an estimated 3 to 4 days on site, with walk-on time typically 4 to 8 hours after the clear coat.

Is a metallic floor slippery?

Smooth metallic is slick when wet, so near doors and wet spots we finish at 0.60 to 0.85 DCOF with aluminum oxide or polymer grit in the clear coat, and the gloss stays everywhere else.

Can I put metallic epoxy on my patio?

No, metallic is for interior and covered rooms, and we recommend a UV-stable polyaspartic deck coating outdoors.

Will my metallic floor look like the sample?

It will match the colors and the style of movement, but every pour is worked by hand, so the exact swirls are yours alone.

Can you hide a crack under a metallic floor?

Yes, we stitch and fill the crack and grind it flush first, as we did in Kevin's game room in Diamond Bar.

How big a deposit do you take?

California caps a home improvement deposit at $1,000 or 10% of the contract, whichever is less, and progress payments follow the work.
